As of the census, it had a population of 18, Marketed as the “Harbor of Hospitality”, Elizabeth City has had a long history of shipping due to its location at a narrowed bend of the Pasquotank River. While Elizabeth City still retains its extensive waterfront property, it is linked to neighboring counties and cities by highways and bridges and serves as the site of the largest US Coast Guard base in the nation. Located at the narrows of the Pasquotank River, the area that would become Elizabeth City soon served as a trading site, and as early as the mid 18th century, inspection stations and ferries were established.
With the addition of minor roads, a schoolhouse, and soon a church, a small community was established at these narrows. In , the town was renamed “Elizabethtown”, but due to confusion with another town of the same name, in , the city was renamed “Elizabeth City”. The improvements made to the Dismal Swamp Canal made Elizabeth City a financial center of trade and commercially successful for the early 19th century.
In , the federal government purchased stocks in the canal and, in , additional funds for improvements were raised by the Norfolk lottery. With these funds, the Dismal Swamp Canal was widened and deepened, allowing for larger boats to ship their goods. Further bolstering Elizabeth City’s financial success was the movement in of the customs house from Camden County to Elizabeth City.

Service was not good. Took 45 min to get a bowl of soup. We only had an hour for lunch. Waitress had too many tables to adequately take care of everyone. We came here for breakfast. Service was OK. We had eggs and bacon. The eggs were spot ob for over-easy and over-medium. The potatoes were a little bland and needed salt, but the grits were hot and homemade.
Coffee was good. The atmosphere was from yesteryear right down the fact that virtually the entire 9AM Saturday morning crowd had white hair. I liked the location downtown because I just like old downtown and try to keep them alive. If you’re looking for a simple, properly prepared American diner breakfast, this is it. They have great soup especially veg beef, you never ask where’s the beef!!!!

Was pleasantly surprised to see this article since I have taken a number of pictures of the mall over the past year as Southgate has continued its decline and now apparent demise. A few years ago, I had a chance to tour for the first time one of the oldest malls in North Carolina, a simple dumbbell shaped mall that has now reached its end. Plans to demolish the mall this year have already been announced and the JCPenney store has already been demolished, so I advanced this post to showcase this mall in its antique glory before it is lost to the dustbin of history.
As the last and only enclosed mall found in Northeastern North Carolina, it should have been so much more, but weak economic factors in the region made it unable to expand or survive. As the location of one of the first ever modern Belk prototype stores, it deserves a mention despite being rather unimpressive by modern mall standards. Photo from January 1, A view to center court from the JCPenney wing. Photo from Jaunary 1, Belk’s mall entrance is obviously one of the most uneventful they did in the 60’s, but it is also one of the very oldest mall-based Belk stores, so it still was bound to look a lot better with “Belk Tyler” sprawled across the front.
Throughout the ‘s and ‘s, Belk built some of the classiest mall entrances in the industry. A look at the front entrance corridor in both directions.
