Involvement in bullying perpetration or victimization could be risk factors for perpetration or victimization in early romantic relationships that emerge within an evolving peer group. Nevertheless, research on this topic is still in its early stages. This study was conducted to fill these gaps in knowledge through a comprehensive research synthesis.
After systematic searches and application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 23 projects that reported relations between bullying perpetration and victimization and dating violence perpetration and victimization were included in this meta-analysis. Moderator analyses showed that this effect was significant for males and females and stronger in cross-sectional studies.
More research is needed to confirm these results, but this meta-analysis suggests that bullying and dating violence could be different behavioral manifestations, in different evolutionary moments and in different contexts, of the same underlying antisocial or violent dispositions, although longitudinal studies are needed to confirm this.

The survey targeted all youth who attended school on a single day and achieved an 84 percent response rate. Access to these data is restricted. Users interested in obtaining these data must complete a Restricted Data Use Agreement, specify the reasons for the request, and obtain IRB approval or notice of exemption for their research.
Quality control of the data entry process involved close monitoring of data entry staff and random selection of surveys for review. Staff were trained to identify surveys that appeared to be not taken seriously and were brought to the project director to verify that the survey should not be entered. Also, surveys were checked if the respondent answered the most severe frequency option to all abuse victimization and perpetration and risk behaviors.
These were reviewed and a final determination to either include or remove the survey was based on the likelihood that the survey was taken in seriousness.

The nature of the relationships between students are distinct in bullying and dating abuse peers versus dating partners. Therefore, the dynamics are distinct in significant ways. This does not mean that they are any less serious or require less attention than bullying. Rather, these behaviors require different prevention and response strategies.
The message must be clear that treating people in abusive ways will not be accepted, and policies must enforce this message to keep students safe. Bullying policies do not define dating abuse, help students, parents and staff understand the dynamics of dating abuse, or specify how dating abuse incidents on school campuses will be addressed.
While California has taken steps to strengthen school responses to peer-to-peer bullying, the Education Code has a serious gap when it comes to dating abuse: it does not define dating abuse, require schools to prohibit it, or ensure that schools have dating abuse policies in place. Addressing dating abuse distinctively in school safety plans and including policies in student handbooks are necessary because they establish a school environment where prevention of dating abuse is recognized as a priority.

Teen Suicide Due to Bullying and Dating Violence!

We learned that the rates were anywhere from epidemic proportions to even six or seven times higher than epidemic levels based on the reliable CDC data! About twice as many adolescent girls as boys were so unhappy with their lives that they were seriously thinking about committing suicide!
Could this have something to do with the fact that almost twice as many young women are bullied either verbally or by cyberbullying than males? A second question was whether they had made a plan within the last 12 months to kill themselves. This rate would actually be higher if the students who successfully committed suicide were still around to respond to this question because suicide is the second or third leading cause of death in middle- and high school students, depending on the exact age range studied.
Sadly their statistics are missing from this survey. It is shocking to think that so many of our middle- and high school students are so distraught that they are attempting suicide because they regard death as a more desirable condition than life! Obviously not all suicide attempts are made due to bullying. Since there were more suicide attempts by middle school students than high school students, it is most likely that the injury rate would also be higher for middle schoolers, but this question was not asked at middle schools.
Those statistics are missing, but the rate of injury is definitely higher than what these surveys report.

I have known Suzie and Kelly Carpenter for nearly two decades, and today I have the pleasure of interviewing the mother-daughter duo! She is fully conversational although she still faced many challenges growing up, and is able to articulate and share those experiences with us today, and is able to give us a very important perspective. Once it became clear that Kelly needed a different environment, her parents made the decision to fight to place Kelly in an autism-friendly school.
The change in Kelly was drastic, and for the first time in her life, she was able to make lasting friendships and grasp the curriculum presented to her. Now 23 years old, Kelly has experience working a regular job; dating; and driving. She discusses the challenges she had to overcome in each of these areas, and how they helped form her into the lady that she is now.
