R eference services, whether face-to-face or virtual, have been and remain a core library service. The importance of reference services is reflected in the library and information science LIS curriculum, but it is often overlooked in continuing education opportunities for librarians. For many working librarians, this can feel rote and ineffectual. After all, they already learned this in school. Experienced librarians may also feel that the reference interview is old hat, while newer librarians would benefit more from real-world practice than a repeat of their reference class. In this speed dating-inspired workshop, we concentrated on approachability at the reference desk rather than accuracy to help reference providers fall in love with reference all over again.

Imagine having one-on-one access to multiple representatives of federal agencies, all of whom have resources available to help address rural health care and social issues. That dream came true for the people who attended the UND Discovery grand challenge event earlier this week. Representatives from eight federal agencies came to campus at their own expense to discuss grant and research opportunities and to solicit proposals for some programs. The University has the capacity to help solve rural issues, said Thomasine Heitkamp, who with grand challenge team members invited the federal representatives.
She noted that the event was held during National Rural Health Week. A panel discussion at the event allowed participants to learn more about submitting proposals for research that might address rural health and other social issues.

Providing name tags for everyone, water for the panelists, extra paper and writing instruments for taking notes, and encouraging the professionals to pass out business cards will add to the experience for both parties.
It is important to pay attention to time during the activity. Each round has to be long enough for the students to gather some information and short enough to get to each panelist during the activity. A stopwatch and a whistle are essential equipment. Most important is to leave time for reflection for the students. At the end of the experience, have students work in their pairs to discuss what they learned.
Ask them to synthesize their learning and report to the group their general conclusions. Then, create an opportunity for each student, or pair of students, to share what they learned with the rest of the class. This sharing can be done in class or in a written format, which can be compiled and distributed to the entire class. The feedback in my class following this activity confirmed for me that this format was a richer learning experience than a traditional panel discussion.
One student remarked that she felt they were getting a special backstage pass to connect with professionals in their field.

Because connecting is so important to the creation of the dialogic classroom, students need to get to know one another. But sometimes the class is just too big and the time too short to ask a meaningful question all the way around the room. Instead, make space for a few people to connect in a short amount of time and people will come away with a larger network, a sense that they are more deeply known, and a new curiosity about others.

First-generation students are close to the heart of Old Dominion University. Our campus is dedicated to supporting our first-generation students, which resulted in our designation as First Forward Institution, this past year. While we as faculty and staff know about the great programs and services available to our students, we found that many first-generation students often are not aware of the opportunities that exist on campus. Since, the first few weeks of the semester are jam-packed with events, we decided to host this social event where the theme was connection.
Although the event was advertised as an ice cream social, we strategically enlisted members of our First-Generation Faculty mentoring program and Success Coaches to help facilitate conversations with the students so that they could organically discuss their programs and other resources available to support our first-generation students on campus. Conversation starters written on popsicle sticks were placed in the middle of each table to help spur conversation.
Some examples of the conversation starters included:.
